Optional Assignment

Balboa park

Civic leaders set aside the land and Kate Sessions designed the park and planted the trees in the park. It is located in Downtown San Diego, and is 1,200 acres, although it was originally 1,400 acres. In 1910, they changed the name of the park from “City Park” to “Balboa Park”. The park is infamous for its vast landscape and amount of trees, as well as the museums that the park houses, like the famous Museum of Natural History.

A non-profit group is being created to financially aid Balboa Park as well as manage the park. The group consists of 17 members that will work together to improve the park in anyway possible.

I think we people should be aware of this so that they know that the parks beauty isn’t all natural, and that most of it has to be thoroughly maintained in order to look this way, and by seeing it, hopefully people will change their ways.

Excerpt:

A nonprofit group will be established to help the city run Balboa Park and raise money to aid in financing what many consider to be the jewel of San Diego’s park system, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced Monday.

Sanders outlined the formation of a 17-member task force — comprised of officials from Balboa Park’s museums, various arts organizations, planning committees and park, community and historic groups — that will determine how the nonprofit entity will be set up and how it will ultimately work with the city to manage the park.

The task force will meet weekly for the next six months. Its first meeting will be next Monday at 6 p.m. in the Santa Fe Room at the Balboa Park Club.
